Larry Halversen's signature black and
white pottery is made of stoneware clay which is fired
to cone 10 or 2300 degrees. Since it is high fired,
his vases, cups and containers are definitely functional.
He combines handbuilding techniques and the potters
wheel to make his sculptural ceramics.
Using an ancient decorative method called
sgrafitto, he coats everything with a black slip through
which he carves to reveal the natural clay beneath.
The carvings are a result of a life long exploration
of line and pattern. The designs for Larry's sculptural
pieces are inspired by ancient stone tools, ritual objects,
primitive shields, and forms of nature.
He has taught ceramics for many years,
and has exhibited around the country at galleries and
juried craft fairs since 1982.
