It is impossible not to smile when you see the work
of Michael Lambert.
His stylized coffee pots, sugar bowls, creamers, and
vases appear capable of strutting across the table on
their own. There is "a kind of elegance,"
says Michael, "but my work also has a cartoon,
humorous quality that I enjoy."
"I try to design functional pieces which are both
very personal and also quite structured in a way that
neither wheel thrown potters, nor ceramic factories
can achieve. Each piece is carefully assembled from
individually cast parts. I love the subtle richness
of thick glazes thinning on the edges of the bright
porcelain clay."
Michael left graduate school at UC Berkeley to pursue
a career in ceramics, studying at the College of Arts
and Crafts in Oakland and the Richmond Art Center. He
opened his own studio in 1976 in Santa Cruz, California.
